Immersed (live)

Immersed“, live. The song is a visceral exemplar of the musical alchemy by which Allison transforms leaden experiences into golden rock and roll. In other words, she makes lemonade out of lemons. Here’s banter for this track. From Chennai, home to some of India’s top choirs, comes gambitsurya’s very individual take.

By Your Side

By Your Side” ~ this ballad from Allison Crowe is a soundtrack to lives and videos. “Live at Wood Hall” features songs as separate tracks to applause and stage banter. The idea, (mine), is to enable people to enjoy the concert/album’s 23 songs on iPods+, with the banter/applause tracks optional. Turns out this is confusing in practice. Here’s banter for this song.

Shine a Light

Mick Jagger was still looking for some tea and sympathy, & long before Keith Richards was a tropical pirate, “The Glimmer Twins” and co. in The Rolling Stones were in the south of France, recording an epic song collection, “Exile on Main Street“. Here’s Allison Crowe and her live-off-the-floor take on one of those tunes, “Shine a Light“:

When Allison Crowe created her “Tidings” album/CD, she brought together songs of spirituality, humanity, faith and redemption… from the sacred to the secular. Alongside traditional carols such as “Silent Night“, “In the Bleak Midwinter“, and “The First Noel“, she recorded her much-loved versions of “Hallelujah” (Leonard Cohen), “River” (Joni Mitchell), “In My Life” and “Let It Be” (The Beatles), “Angel” (Sarah McLachlan), and this song – written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, for the Rolling Stones’ 1972 masterwork, “Exile on Main Street“.

The Rolling Stones Fan Club Office saluted Allison Crowe’s recording of “Shine a Light” on its web home-page. The RSFCO, established in 1964, and run by fans for fans, lists news about the Stones’ first contract being up for auction, The Stones and Beatles induction into the UK Music Hall of Fame, Marianne Faithfull on tour, and other current items of interest to Stones Planet inhabitants.

Of Crowe’s release, the European-based RSFCO says: A new album by Canadian Allison Crowe (22 years) reached the record market in time for the Christmas sales. This star is an absolute outstanding singer, and her Shine A Light by Jagger/Richards is the whole album worth…”

Allison Crowe’s voice and piano-playing is accompanied by Dave Baird on bass and Kevin Clevette on drums. The session was captured by Producer/Engineer Larry Anschell (Pearl Jam, Sarah McLachlan, k-os, Bif Naked).

Let It Be

Let It Be” is our next “Tidings” song – captured live-off-the-floor at Turtle studios in White Rock, Canada. The Beatles’ songbook is rich for interpreters and this gospel-inflected tune by John Lennon and Paul McCartney is one which Allison Crowe loves to perform and have people sing along.

Here’s another “Let It Be” performance, recorded in the same studio as the Tidings version:

Hallelujah

Next album to enjoy is “Tidings“. To spur Spring, with the robins and the crocuses, we’ll save “seasonal” songs for when we want the snow… And, so, we begin with “Hallelujah” – Allison Crowe’s much-loved version of what’s become Leonard Cohen’s most-covered song. Allison’s single/first-take performance is recorded live-off-the-floor at Larry Anschell’s Turtle Recording studios, White Rock, British Columbia, Canada.
This video, recorded live-in-the-studio, also a single/first take, is a different performance, and one which has delighted an audience of more than seven million people so far:

Allison Crowe’s live take on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” so redefined an approach to the song it was plenty controversial in the first years of this century. Once that dam burst, and hundreds of covers poured forth, Crowe’s version took its place as a much-loved, classic, interpretation.

Whether I’m Wrong

Mid-2003, Allison Crowe is based in New York City’s Chelsea ‘hood. It’s Code Orange. People fear. The origin of “Whether I’m Wrong” – the song which closes her “secrets” album/CD.

On “secrets” it’s followed by a ‘hidden’ track – the Irish aire “Believe Me If All (Those Endearing Young Charms)“. Little-known fact – the time/space between WIW and BMIA is precisely the same as that which falls between “The End” and “Her Majesty” to close The Beatles’ “Abbey Road“.
